Baraza tribunal set to start sittings on July 2
The tribunal to investigate the conduct of Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza will start sittings on July 2.
The panel chaired by retired Tanzania Chief Justice Augustino Ramadhani met on June 7 after the gazettement of rules of procedure that were published in the Kenya Gazette on April 20 and set ground for the hearing.
“The tribunal has sat and was of the opinion that preliminary work necessary for the commencement of the hearing is almost complete. Ms Baraza will now be served with a notice of hearing within the week of June 11, 2012,” the press release sent to media houses by Mr Ramadhan said.
It added: “As to whether the hearing will be open to the public or not will depend upon the decision made by Hon Lady Justice Baraza. Otherwise, the law requires the hearing to be in private.”
Mr Ramadhan, however, said his team will keep the public and the media informed of the progress they will be making.
The tribunal to investigate Ms Baraza who allegedly threatened to kill a security guard, Rebecca Kerubo, at the Village Market in Nairobi on New Year’s eve has been in place for about four months. (READ: Guard seeks to join Baraza case)
It was not able to transact business for about one and a half months upon its swearing after she petitioned the constitution of the tribunal at the High Court.
