Spurs were left red-faced at Heathrow Airport yesterday when they waited in vain for the mercurial midfielder.
Villas-Boas hung around hoping for a Modric late show as the rest of the squad checked in for their trip to the USA.
In the end Rafa van der Vaart confirmed Modric was not coming — finding out via his mobile phone.
Having been told by a reporter from a Spanish newspaper that Modric was already abroad, the Dutchman called his team-mate’s number.
And he was greeted by a Croatian mobile phone network’s messaging service, which proved Modric’s whereabouts.
Levy blocked Modric’s move to AVB’s old club Chelsea this time last season and he is in no mood to give in now.
But Villas-Boas has already long resigned himself to losing the player.
He said: “I tried to sign him last summer for Chelsea. He will be a big loss. He is a player who can make the difference.”
Van der Vaart predicted a swift end to the sorry saga.
He said: “It is a difficult situation. The chairman is angry but he is also very upset at what is happening.
“I think everything will be fixed in three or four days.”
The Dutch midfielder also revealed he had tried unsuccessfully to talk Modric round before the Croat fled home.
He said: “When I was driving back to training it reminded me of when I wanted to sign for Madrid.
“I saw he was very touched and it is a complicated situation.”
Real manager Jose Mourinho is keen to pay no more than £27m for Modric.
